iFi Audio iCAN Phantom 1.5 – Reference Hybrid Headphone Amplifier

The iFi Audio iCAN Phantom 1.5 is the refined second act of iFi's flagship desktop amplifier, built to drive anything you plug into it: sensitive IEMs, high impedance dynamics, stubborn planars and full electrostatic headsets. Two complete Class A input stages sit side by side, one discrete solid-state and one all-valve, so the same track can be played straight or given body and bloom at the flick of a switch. At Soundium it sits at the very top of the desktop amplifier shelf, for listeners who want one box to serve an entire headphone collection.

Key Features

  • Three switchable amplification modes: Solid-State for precision, Tube for warmth and Tube+ for a richer, more romantic character, all running Class A through matched General Electric 5670 valves.
  • Wider gain ladder (0 dB, 12 dB, 24 dB): the 1.5 replaces the earlier 0/9/18 dB steps, giving cleaner headroom jumps between IEMs and power hungry planars.
  • Stronger IEMatch attenuation: up to 12 dB single-ended and up to 24 dB balanced drops the noise floor for ultra sensitive in-ears without touching the volume pot.
  • Built-in electrostatic energizer: Normal and Custom/Pro bias outputs deliver 230 V to 640 V RMS, so stat headphones connect directly with no separate energizer box.
  • Reworked colour display and Nexis app control: a new VU meter view with redesigned interface, plus remote control, diagnostics, firmware updates and live tube health monitoring from the iFi Nexis app.
  • XBass Pro and XSpace Pro: three intensity levels each, tuned in the analogue domain, for low end reinforcement and soundstage expansion without digital processing.

Customer Benefits

Most headphone amplifiers force a choice: valve character or solid-state grip, dynamic drivers or electrostatics, IEM friendly noise floor or planar friendly power. The iCAN Phantom 1.5 refuses all of them. Over 15,000 mW balanced into 16 ohms means nothing in your collection runs out of headroom, while the deeper IEMatch attenuation and finer gain steps keep a 16 ohm in-ear dead quiet on the same unit. It also works as a fully balanced preamplifier, so it can anchor a desktop system rather than just hang off one.

Quick Specs

  • Type: analogue headphone amplifier, preamplifier and electrostatic energizer
  • Amplification: discrete Class A solid-state and all-valve Class A (matched GE 5670 pair)
  • Gain settings: 0 dB, 12 dB, 24 dB
  • Output power (16 Ω): balanced > 15,000 mW max, > 6,250 mW RMS; single-ended > 5,760 mW max, > 4,500 mW RMS
  • Output voltage (600 Ω): balanced > 27 V; single-ended > 14 V
  • Electrostatic output: 230 V RMS (Normal); 500 V to 640 V RMS (Custom/Pro)
  • SNR: balanced > 145 dB(A); single-ended > 130 dB(A)
  • THD+N (balanced): Solid-State ≤ 0.0015 %; Tube ≤ 0.002 %; Tube+ ≤ 0.012 %
  • Frequency response: 0.5 Hz to 500 kHz (-3 dB)

Use Cases / Ideal For

Built for the listener whose collection has outgrown a single amplifier: a pair of electrostatics on a stand, a planar flagship, and a set of custom IEMs that most desktop amps hiss through. It suits desktop listening rooms and studio reference positions equally, and its preamp outputs let it feed active monitors or a power amplifier from the same chassis.

Compatibility

Inputs are balanced XLR plus three RCA pairs. Headphone outputs cover 4-pin XLR balanced, 4.4 mm balanced, 3.5 mm S-Balanced and combination balanced jacks, alongside the Normal and Custom/Pro electrostatic sockets. Preamp outputs are available on XLR and RCA. Control comes from the front panel, the supplied infrared remote or the iFi Nexis app over the network.

Pros & Cons

✅ Pros:

  • Drives every headphone type, including electrostatics, from one chassis
  • Solid-State, Tube and Tube+ modes give three genuinely different voicings
  • Wider 0/12/24 dB gain ladder and deeper IEMatch make IEM use far quieter
  • Nexis app adds tube health monitoring, diagnostics and firmware updates

⚠️ Cons:

  • Large, heavy and mains powered, so it is a desktop fixture rather than a portable
  • The sheer number of modes, filters and bias options takes time to learn

The 1.5 revision is not a redesign, it is a tightening of an already extreme amplifier: better gain spacing, quieter IEM operation, a clearer display and an app that finally tells you how the valves are aging. For anyone assembling a final headphone system, the iFi Audio iCAN Phantom 1.5 at Soundium is about as close to an endpoint as this category gets.
